Physics of Docking 102E - Side Ties

The simplest way to dock a boat is to tie to a side tie. A side tie is typically a long face dock or the end dock on a row of slips. The advantage to a side tie is that you typically have sufficient room to maneuver in and out. In case of problems, you can just pull away, reposition, and try again.
